Its Importance

Our first duty toward God and our fellow beings is that of self-development. Every faculty with which the Creator has endowed us should be cultivated to the highest degree of perfection, that we may be able to do the greatest amount of good of which we are capable. Hence that time is spent to good account which is used in the establishment and preservation of physical and mental health. {CH 107}

The first study of the young should be to know themselves and how to keep their bodies in health. {FE 26.2}
Every person should have a knowledge of nature’s remedial agencies and how to apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge. {MH 127.2}

The use of natural remedies requires an amount of care and effort that many are not willing to give. Nature’s process of healing and upbuilding is gradual, and to the impatient it seems slow. The surrender of hurtful indulgences requires sacrifice. But in the end it will be found that nature, untrammeled, does her work wisely and well. Those who persevere in obedience to her laws will reap the reward in health of body and health of mind. {MH 127}

The body is the only medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character. Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers. His success here means the surrender to evil of the whole being. The tendencies of our physical nature, unless under the dominion of a higher power, will surely work ruin and death. {MH 130.1}
The body is to be brought into subjection. The higher powers of the being are to rule. The passions are to be controlled by the will, which is itself to be under the control of God. The kingly power of reason, sanctified by divine grace, is to bear sway in our lives. {MH 130.2}

There are many ways of practicing the healing art, but there is only one way that Heaven approves. God’s remedies are the simple agencies of nature that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity of life, and a firm trust in God are remedies for the want of which thousands are dying; yet these remedies are going out of date because their skillful use requires work that the people do not appreciate. Fresh air, exercise, pure water, and clean, sweet premises are within the reach of all with but little expense, but drugs are expensive, both in the outlay of means and in the effect produced upon the system. {5T 443.1}

Where does it Come from? The Source

By the Spirit of Prophecy, as manifested through Ellen G. White, God has sent to His people specific instructions regarding health and life, which obeyed, secure that “more abundant life” here and now: in preparation for that LIFE which measures with eternity. Through Ellen G. White, there came to this people thousands of manuscripts., letters, magazine articles and books, for over fifty years. These instructions have stood the test of scientific investigation and the test of time. Obedience to these principles secures a degree of health which is truly, a spectacle to the nations. In 1905, Ellen White wrote the book, “Ministry of Healing”, a grand summary of these principles of health had been revealed to her over a period of several decades.

This book (Ministry of Healing) contains the wisdom of the Great Physician. To me it has been a precious privilege to donate my work on these books to the cause of God. In the future there should be well-planned and persevering efforts made to increase their sale. {9T 71.1}
Early in my public labors I was bidden by the Lord, “Write, write the things that are revealed to you.” At the time this message came to me, I could not hold my hand steady. My physical condition made it impossible for me to write. But again came the word, “Write the things that are revealed to you.” I obeyed; and as the result it was not long before I could write page after page with comparative ease. Who told me what to write? Who steadied my right hand, and made it possible for me to use a pen?–It was the Lord. {RH, June 14, 1906 par. 17}

The Authority of the Instructions

Because the corruption was nearly universal in his age, did he then argue that it would not pay for him to stand separate and alone for God’s law? Noah’s Faith (Gen. 6.)

Abraham Gen 15:6 – It was not a small trial to Abraham to be called to leave his home and acquaintances and go into a land that he knew not. When he came into that land, he found that the Canaanites were there, and he would have all their idolatry to meet. {CTr 71.2}
This was a severe trial to Abraham’s faith… All God’s followers, wherever they shall go, should carry the true principles of their religion with them. If sin, forgetfulness of God, and idolatry exist in the places where they shall go, then is the time for them to show their true principles. {CTr 71.5}

A day of great intellectual darkness has been shown to be favorable to the success of popery. It will yet be demonstrated that a day of great intellectual light is equally favorable for its success. In past ages, when men were without God’s Word, and without the knowledge of the truth, their eyes were blindfolded, and thousands were ensnared, not seeing the net spread for their feet. In this generation there are many whose eyes become dazzled by the glare of human speculations, “science falsely so-called;” they discern not the net, and walk into it as readily as if blindfolded. God designed that man’s intellectual powers should be held as a gift from his Maker, and should be employed in the service of truth and righteousness; but when pride and ambition are cherished, and men exalt their own theories above the Word of God, then intelligence can accomplish greater harm than ignorance. Thus the false science of the nineteenth century, which undermines faith in the Bible, will prove as successful in preparing the way for the acceptance of the papacy, with its pleasing forms, as did the withholding of knowledge in opening the way for its aggrandizement in the Dark Ages. {GC88 572.3}

Early Neglect, and Results:
There was a time when it became difficult, if not impossible to convene committee sessions, either of the General Conference, or oof our largest local conference (Michigan) because of the illness of so many of our leaders. In the pages of our church paper (Review and Herald) a call was made for our people everywhere to unite in a season of fasting and prayer, that this rebuke would be removed from God’s people so that the movement could again go forward in strength. In response, through Ellen G. White, attention was again directed to the instructions already given, which had been neglected; and to the fact that God’s promises of health are dependent upon our OBEDIENCE to thhe LAWS OF LIFE which God has placed within our beings.

What a blessed experience and solemn responsibility is this to which God has called His people. Our commission from Him is to communicate the laws of LIFE, which in creation, He placed within our reach. With this commission, He supplies the motivating power for obedience to these laws, through which He bestows that “more abundant” life, here and now; and the unbounded joy of LIFE which measures with eternity.

Warnings Against Deceptive Counterfeits: (False Prophets)

1Jn. 4:1-3 – “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Believe! Gen. 3:1 : – “And he (the serpent) said unto the woman, “Ye, shall not eat of every tree of the garden?. What Satan inferred by this sacrilege, was that either God did not mean what He said, or He did not know the truth of the matter, or He deliberately stated an untruth.

Eve was punished, not because she believed Satan’s deception but because she disbelieved God.
With increasing frequency today, we hear this same lie insinuating itself: “Yea, hath God said?” But whenever and wherever we hear this Satanic lie, regardless of the status or the popularity of the source, we can answer with positive assurance.
Yea verily, God hath said, and I believe that He means what He says…
Let the Testimonies be judged by their fruits. What is the spirit of their teaching? What has been the result of their influence? “All who desire to do so can acquaint themselves with the fruits of these visions. For seventeen years God has seen fit to let them survive and strengthen against the opposition of Satan’s forces and the influence of human agencies that have aided Satan in his work.” [VOL. 1, P. 330 (1862).] {5T 671.1}
“God is either teaching His church, reproving their wrongs and strengthening their faith, or He is not. This work is of God, or it is not. God does nothing in partnership with Satan.
